The BLS for Healthcare Providers (HCP) course is designed to teach the skills of CPR for victims of all ages (Adult, Child & Infant) including ventilation with a barrier device, a pocket facemask, and a bag vavle mask device.

It also teaches the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and the relief of Foreign Body Airway Obstruction (FBAO). This is the only Irish Heart Foundation/American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) course that certifies successful completion for healthcare professionals.

The BLS (HCP) course is the recommended Basic Life Support course for all Healthcare Professionals.

COURSE DETAILS
 
 

TARGET AUDIENCE

It is intended for participants who provide health care to patients in a wide variety of settings, including inhospital and out of hospital settings.

These healthcare providers may include (but are not limited to) Physicians, Medical Students, General Practitioners, General and Psychiatric Clinical Nurse Managers and Staff Nurses, Paramedics, Emergency Medical Technicians, Dentists, Respiratory Therapists, Cardiac Technicians, Cardiac Rehabilitation Staff, Physiotherapists, Physical and Occupational Therapists, Nursing Students, Care Assistants and other Allied Healthcare Personnel.

TIME FRAME
This 5-6 hour programme involves multiple learning activities combining  Instructor & DVD led skills demonstration and practice sessions that include:
• One and two rescuer Adult CPR
• One and two rescuer Child CPR
• One and two rescuer Infant CPR
• Adult, Child and Infant recovery position
• Adult, Child and Infant choking (conscious and unconscious)
• Safe and effective use of an AED
• Special considerations when using an AED
• Use of face masks & bag-valve-mask devices
• Skills group practice
• Peer group practice
PHYSICIAN & DVD LED PRESENTATIONS
• The chain of survival
• Presentation & discussion on Angina, Heart Attack, Cardiac Arrest & Stroke

CRITERIA FOR SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION
• Actively participate in, practice, and complete all skills and skills assessments
• Demonstrate competence in the performance on manikins using the American Heart Association's critical skills checklists while performing the following skills

  • Adult & Child one rescuer CPR
  • Adult two rescuer CPR with an AED
  • Infant one and two rescuer CPR
  • Score 84% in the post-course MCQ
INSTRUCTORS
Our Instructors come from an Irish healthcare setting and all remain in day-to-day clinical practice. They are regarded as experts in their field and have a proven ability to teach. CODE BLUE is a registered and approved Irish Heart Foundation / American Heart Association training site. Course certificates can only be issued to approved and registered training sites where the currently certified Instructors carry full public and professional liability insurance.
CERTIFICATION
Participants who successfully complete the course,
including the written examination and skills evaluation,
will receive an American Heart Association / Irish Heart
Foundation Healthcare Provider completion card (credential). This accreditation is recognised in over 50
countries throughout the world.

SKILLS MAINTENANCE AND RENEWAL
The Irish Heart Foundation/American Heart Associationrecommend a 2 year renewal interval for all who complete the HCP course.

CODE BLUE service and supply all their own training equipment. We provide higher than normal manikin to Instructor ratios on our courses allowing participants additional skill practice time.
