MedicALS

The MedicALS course is designed to teach hospital doctors to assess and manage acute medical emergencies. Students use a structured ABCDE survey to identify life-threatening problems and prioritise interventions.

The course format comprises approximately 4 hours of online tutorials, followed by 2 days of hands-on practical scenarios, supervised by expert instructors.

Certification is by the Advanced Life Support Group (ALSG) in the UK. It is ideally suited to SHOs, Registrars, SpRs and Consultants in ED or Internal Medicine.

COURSE DETAILS
 
 

TARGET AUDIENCE
It is intended for participants who provide critical care to patients in in-hospital settings.

These healthcare providers may include Consultants, Registrars, Senior House Officers.

TIME FRAME
The online component takes approximately 4 hours and covers the theoretical basis for the practical sessions.

The 2-day face-to-face programme involves lectures, skills demonstrations and practice sessions that include:

  • The ABCDE Survey
  • Airway assessment and management
  • Respiratory assessment and management
  • Circulatory assessment and management
  • Neurological assessment and management
  • Examination of rashes, hot swollen joints
  • The "Don't Know" patient
PHYSICIAN-LED PRESENTATIONS
� Structured patient assessment
� Demonstration of patient assessment by faculty
CRITERIA FOR SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION
� Completion of the pre-course online preparation.
� Actively participate in, practice, and complete all skills and learning stations
� Pass a Megacode (moulage) Test
INSTRUCTORS
Our highly-experienced instructors come from a front-line healthcare setting and all remain in day-to-day clinical practice. They are regarded as experts in their field and have a proven ability to teach. CODE BLUE is a registered and approved Advanced Life-Support Group (ALSG) training site.
CERTIFICATION
Participants, who successfully complete the course, including the online MCQ and skills evaluation,
will receive an ALSG MedicALS provider course completion card (credential).
INSTRUCTOR RATIO
Participant-Instructor ratio 3:1(max)

SKILLS MAINTENANCE AND RENEWAL

The Advanced LKife Support Group (ALSG) recommend a 4 year renewal interval for all who complete the MedicALS Provider course.
ONLINE PRE-COURSE TUTORIALS
The online tutorials and MCQ (VLE) MUST be completed at least 3 days before the MedicALS course. Students who do not complete the VLE in time wmay attend the course as observers but will not receive a completion certificate.
COURSE EQUIPMENT
Code Blue service and supply all their own training equipment. We provide higher than normal manikin to Instructor ratios on our courses allowing participants additional skill practice time.
